Based on the latest US Department of Commerce report, retail revenue continues to be strong, even after experiencing record high growth in 2020 and 2021. In the short term, high inflation accelerated retail revenue and likely reflects 5% of the growth over 2021.
Because retail has been growing so robustly since the pandemic – and because most of the e-commerce growth was so accelerated into Q2 2020, we’re now seeing brick and mortar grow faster than e-commerce for the first time ever.
E-Commerce has retained all its Q2 2020 gains and is still above where we’d have expected it to be prior to the pandemic, but the rate of growth has slowed.
Moving forward both retail and e-commerce are facing unprecedently high comps. Inflation and Supply Chain are putting huge pressure on retail margins. Economic uncertainty, war in Europe, continuing supply chain disruptions, and pandemic flare ups all make the future very uncertain.
